Cotton Base-Layer Jersey 120 GSM, 158 cm

A 100% cotton single jersey, 120 GSM on a 158 cm width, built as a base-layer cloth — the soft, breathable knit worn next to the skin. No polyester, no spandex, no modal: just combed cotton, so it breathes and feels natural the way only cotton does. It is the right hand for underwear, inner tops, tees and any garment that sits against the body.

CustomizationAvailable — shade and weight confirmed at quotation. A combed cotton jersey dyes cleanly, so a made-to-match is straightforward.
Knitting technicsA single jersey knit in 100% cotton. Smooth and light on the face, loop structure on the back, the natural give of a tee. There is no spandex — the recovery is the knit’s own, which is exactly what you want in a relaxed base layer.
Composition100% combed cotton. No polyester, no spandex, no modal — which is why it breathes and feels natural against the skin, and why it needs the cotton care (a little shrink, a little crease).
YarnCombed cotton; counts are set at order.

Weight120 GSM / 3.5 oz/yd². A light jersey — a base layer, an underwear cloth, a tee, a childrenswear top, not a structured piece.
Width158 cm / 62 inch. A base-layer width, narrower than the 168–185 cm a jersey usually gives you — see the note on what that costs.
ColourStock shades quoted by number (No.001–No.096), or dyed to match a swatch you supply. The quality is shown in a soft blue; send the shade and we match it, not the chip.
HandSoft and breathable, the natural cotton hand; it reads matte and dry rather than shiny, and it is the cloth you reach for when the garment is worn next to the skin.
Stretch & recoveryThe knit’s own give, roughly 25–35% across the width, with light recovery and no spandex. Fine for a relaxed base layer; not a compressive activewear stretch.
Shrinkage4–6% length and 3–4% width on the first wash (cotton), controlled by pre-shrink / sanforising at finishing where the fit is precise.
PillingMinimal — cotton pills far less than a rayon and barely at all in a fine single jersey.
FastnessGood wash and light fastness; cotton is the dependable everyday choice.
Making upA ball-point or jersey needle, a light tension; a straight stitch holds because there is no stretch to fight. Press each seam as you go.
CuttingLay single-ply for a base layer; a sharp blade, mark the grain off the wales. The 158 cm width is enough for most base-layer lays.
PressingCotton takes heat and steam gladly — press on the right side for a crisp face, or through a cloth to keep it matte.
AbrasionGood for a base layer; the cotton surface wears well against the skin.

100% cotton, the breathable choice

One hundred percent combed cotton means the hand and the breathability are real — this is not a synthetic-feeling cloth and there is no modal in it despite the mill’s “modal-feel” tag. It is soft, it washes clean, and it is the natural choice for anything worn next to the skin: underwear, inner tops, tees, childrenswear.

The honest limits are the cotton ones: it creases (press it, or embrace it), and it shrinks a little on first wash unless pre-shrunk. We sanforise where the fit is precise; for a relaxed base layer it is a non-event.

120 GSM is a base-layer weight

One hundred and twenty GSM is the light end of the jersey range — light enough to sit under something, substantial enough to be a finished tee on its own. With the soft cotton hand it reads as a comfort-first cloth rather than a fashion one.

And the 158 cm width is narrower than a standard jersey, so on a wide lay it costs a few percent of marker. Spec this for base layers, underwear and lightweight tees, and let a wider jersey do the wide, fluid work. We will flag the marker impact at the enquiry.

A base layer is about the hand

For a garment worn against the skin, the hand is the spec: soft, breathable, no plastic note, no static. A 100% cotton single jersey delivers that without the care of a viscose or the sheen of a poly. The recovery is the knit’s own — gentle, not a compressive hold — which is right for a relaxed layer.

The planning note is the same as for any narrow cotton cloth: spec it for the base-layer pieces it is built for, and we will tell you the marker impact before you commit a programme.

Three things that go wrong on a cotton base-layer jersey. It is cotton: no modal, no poly — the mill tags it “modal-feel” but the cloth is 100% cotton. Shrink: a little first-wash shrink — pre-shrunk where the fit is precise. Width: 158 cm, so cost the marker before a wide programme.

Send a swatch or pick a shade

Tell us the garment, the shade and the quantity — or take a stock shade and we will send the shade card and a hanger swatch. For a made-to-match cotton, post or courier a swatch and we come back with a lab dip and a price at your volume.
