French Coarse-Gauge Rib 250 GSM, 165 cm
A coarse-gauge rib knit in 100% polyester, 250 GSM on a 165 cm width. The “French” rib here is a chunky, open vertical-rib structure rather than a fine knit — it reads as a textured, structured cloth with a strong natural stretch. It is a sweater-body cloth, a structured top, a cosy cuff-and-collar cloth, not a brushed fleece.

| Customization | Available — the shade is confirmed at quotation. A rib is piece-dyed, so a made-to-match is a standard poly dye. |
|---|---|
| Knitting technics | A coarse-gauge rib knit. Two needle beds form vertical ribs (the “French” or full-cardigan-style rib here is a chunky, open version), so the cloth has a built-in structure and a strong natural recovery from the rib itself — no spandex needed. It is a structured knit, not a brushed fleece. |
| Composition | 100% polyester. No spandex, no cotton — the recovery comes from the rib construction, and the polyester keeps it cheap, colourfast and easy-care. |
| Yarn | Polyester, rib-gaited at the machine; counts are set at order. |

| Weight | 250 GSM / 7.4 oz/yd². A sweater-weight rib — a finished top on its own, a structured dress, a chunky cuff and collar. |
| Width | 165 cm / 65 inch. A standard rib width; the rib repeats across it. |
| Colour | Stock shades quoted by number (No.001–No.096), or dyed to match a swatch you supply. The quality is shown in a grey-green; send the shade and we match it, not the chip. |
| Hand | Textured and structured from the ribs, with a dry synthetic hand; the open gauge gives it air and a little spring. |
| Stretch & recovery | Strong across the width from the rib — opens 40–60% and snaps back because the rib wants to — with no spandex. This is the cloth’s headline property. |
| Shrinkage | Under 3% — heat-set polyester. |
| Pilling | Grade 4. A smooth polyester rib pills far less than a brushed fleece would. |
| Fastness | Excellent wash and light fastness. |
| Making up | A ball-point or jersey needle; the ribs want a seam that lets them sit, so a slight ease and a cover-stitch hem reads best. The stretch means a stable hem treatment, not a raw edge. |
| Cutting | Lay one-way with the ribs aligned; a sharp blade, mark the grain off the wales. The rib direction is the “up” for layout. |
| Pressing | Medium through a cloth; do not flatten the ribs with a hard hot shoe or you lose the structure. Steam lifts them. |
| Abrasion | Good — the smooth rib surface wears well. |

| Price | US$ 16.15 / kg (300–999 kg) · US$ 14.62 / kg (1,000 kg+) |
| Yield | ≈ 2.4 running metres per kg at 250 GSM × 165 cm (≈ US$ 6.66 per running metre, ≈ US$ 4.04 per m²). At the 1,000 kg+ price that is ≈ US$ 6.03 per running metre, ≈ US$ 3.65 per m². |
| Lead time | Stock shades ship from the lot on hand; dyeing to match adds 7–10 days for the lab dip and your approval, plus bulk. |
| Packing | Roll-packed, about 20 kg per roll, poly bag inside a woven sack. |
| Sample | Hanger swatch and shade card free; a lab dip against your own cloth charged at cost and credited against the bulk order. |
| Documents | Invoice, packing list, B/L, certificate of origin; test reports on request. |
| Care | Machine wash cool to warm, mild detergent, tumble dry low or line dry; press medium through a cloth. Easy care — that is the polyester point. |
A rib knit, not a fleece
The first thing to be clear about is the structure: this is a rib knit, with vertical ribs formed on two needle beds, not a brushed pile fleece. The warmth and the body come from the structure and the 250 GSM weight, not from a raised surface. So it reads as a textured, structured cloth — a sweater body, a cosy top — rather than a plush one.
The practical upside of a rib is the recovery: the rib wants to snap back to its narrow state, so a cuff or a collar holds its shape with no spandex in the mix. For a buyer that means a structured knit that behaves, at a polyester price.

Coarse gauge reads chunky
A coarse (large) gauge means the ribs are bold and open rather than fine, so the cloth reads as a chunky, characterful knit — the “French rib” look, a relaxed sweater hand. It is heavier and more substantial than a fine-gauge rib, and it shows the rib pattern clearly, which is what gives it its fashion read.
Spec it for sweaters, structured tops and dresses, and for cuffs and collars where you want a rib without going to a separate trim. It is not a fleece, so it will not give you the plush warmth of a brushed cloth — it gives you structure and stretch instead.

100% polyester means easy care
One hundred percent polyester means the care story is simple: wash it, tumble it, it keeps its colour and its shape, and it costs less than a natural-fibre rib. There is no spandex to degrade and no wool to shrink, so the recovery you get is the rib’s, and it lasts.
The honest limit is the synthetic one: a polyester rib does not have the dry, natural hand of a cotton or wool rib, and it will not breathe like one. For a cosy structured top that gets washed hard, it is exactly right; for a luxury hand-feel, that is a different cloth and we will point you to it.
Three things that go wrong on a coarse-gauge rib. Stretch: it opens 40–60% across the width from the rib — a stable hem, not a raw edge. Pressing: steam through a cloth, do not flatten the ribs. Shade: match the grey-green to your trim, not to a chip.
Send a swatch or pick a shade
Tell us the garment, the shade and the quantity — or take a stock shade and we will send the shade card and a hanger swatch. For a made-to-match grey-green or colour, post or courier a swatch and we come back with a lab dip and a price at your volume.
The structured knits sit next to the Single-Sided Plush Fleece 300 GSM for a plush warm option, and the Cotton-Like Cuff Rib 187 GSM for a narrower trim rib. The rest of the range is on the fabrics page.
